CREATIVE PROCESS

EACH TATTOO begins with a new client consultation where we will sit down for about an hour and begin the creative process. We will discuss the details, go over your references and my own, and start sketching, drawing, patterning, or whatever is necessary to compose and design your tattoo.

I will take a $100 design fee, which will cover that time, and then at the close of that we will wrap up and schedule your next session. During your second session we will pick up right where we left off and continue the development, and then begin tattooing.
This second session is usually the longest- I recommend a 5-6 hour session to make sure we have enough time to complete development, prepare any stencil work or freehand the design onto your skin and get a significant amount of lining done.
If we need more time, depending on availability, we can try to schedule a second session right away to make sure we get it to a good stopping point immediately so it can heal together before proceeding.

In  the opposite case, any unused time (Including your initial design/consult- if we cut early or don’t need that much time for basic ideation,) will be credited and rolled forwarded over to your next session.

If during your first session, we deem it necessary to we will schedule more design time to develop more detailed elements, then we will schedule an interim design session to develop the project further before your first tattoo session.

For all sessions I currently charge $125/hr for each session, with 50% due at the time of scheduling and the balance due the day of.

THE FINE ART APPROACH

For those who either do not have a clear idea of what they want to tattoo, or desire to have their body be the canvas for an artist’s ultimate expression, there is the Fine Art Approach. This option, is much closer to a fine art commission-based method, where you tell your artist what you want to see in your painting, what you like in their work and past pieces of theirs that you love, and then they create an expressive, inspired piece of art for you based on your discussion.
This translates into the client ideally telling me what they want to see IN your tattoo, roughly where you want to put it, and what style you would like to see it in. While, with my background in custom tattooing and design, I am able to get very specific in the description of the more advanced qualities and elements we can put in your piece, (such as levels of abstraction, styles, execution, line quality, etc) the important function here is that it is up to the artist’s discretion.
In the extremely unlikely contingency (and I mean “unlikely” as in “this has never happened”, and probably wont, but could conceivably, which is why we call it a “contingency,”) that you receive your completed Fine Art For Bodies piece and you are not happy with the result, and there are changes you’d like to discuss;
The artist will elect to either
a)Revert back to custom design process, (above) or where the client will be required to sit in on a design session while we co-create, charged at the hourly rate; or
b)In either case, no deposits or fees paid will be refunded; the design will be released to and remain with the artist for future use, the client relinquishes any rights to it, and additional hours may be charged for the time lost in development of a piece that ultimately never came to be.
What I do not want to see is a case where I have been commissioned to produce a piece of fine art just so a client can see what it looks like. If this is your interest, please discuss this in advance as well.
THE IN-BETWEENS
NATURALLY there are many steps between these two (dichotomies). There are many ways to tattoo as there are tattoo artists out there, and no tattoo is as important as the person wearing it.
In the case that there is something that you would like to do which does not fit within these terms, please pay careful attention to what you are reading, and DISCUSS THIS WITH YOUR ARTIST to exhaustion before you embarking. As they say in Portuguese: “Tudo se resolve na conversa-” I am sure we can arrive at a happy medium.

THE SIMPLER TATTOOS
(Yes I still do them 🙂 I thought it important to take a moment aside to say that I still do, and thoroughly enjoy smaller, simpler, and “funner” tattoos. Many of the smallest simplest tattoos can be the most meaningful.
Most of the work that I do is so exacting, and serious, high brow, and momentous… This is my way of reminding myself that I am still a person, still an artist, and still very much engaged with the spirit and culture of tattooing within our society.

I can not necessarily make concessions to make simpler tattoos “cheaper” than my normal working rates, but they remain very sought after, because I DO actually put the same amount of care, detail, and craftsmanship into them as I do into my major pieces.

If you can bring me a tattoo-ready image, I will usually sit down and get right to it 🙂
These tattoos are billed hourly, from start to finish, similar to the custom design approach; So if they require must customization the cost may be prohibitive, but I have no problem doing them. Alternatively, and purely at the artists discretion, these may be done at a flat rate, (which may be lower or higher than the time required, if the artist does not feel that it fits within fair pricing for the piece.)

These I usually do not schedule, I simply put them in at the beginning or end of a given day if time is available.

COST & TERMS

One hour Consultation/Design session: $100
Hourly rate: $125/hour
%50 deposit due at scheduling, remainder due at time of service.

Cancellation: 48 hour advance notice is required to cancel or reschedule an appointment.
Because your deposit represents earnest money paid in advance for time on the artists schedule that can never be recovered, if the artist receives less than 48 hours notice of rescheduling, your deposit may be forfeit.

There are NO refunds, for ANY reason, EVER.

The Process

“Fine Art For Bodies  has long been the home of the philosophy that no tattoo is more important than the wearer.
(First ensconced by the venerable Jun Matsui)

Tattoos are not only a permanent addition or modification to our public and even our self image, but they are often a strong statement of meaning, an illustration to the stories of our lives.
In keeping, I have offered clients unprecedented amounts of input on tattoo design.

Over the years, I have listened to the feedback of my clients and learned that this is not always ideal. While this does provide the opportunity for continuous, unlimited feedback on the part of the client, this can be cumbersome for some, if they are truly interested in an original work of freely expressive creative art.

While some people come in with a cut and dried, firm idea and want someone to draw it, others will come in with a loose concept and want to get a piece of art created for them. As both my reputation grew, and I’ve developed as an artist, I have discovered that many people are actually much more interested wearing my artistic vision rather than their own, and in me specializing in a style. Furthermore, that style should be my OWN.

Creating Without Category…

Combining this revelation with my desire to pursue more of my own fine art, the astounding advancements in tattooing recently, and my own realization that the most amazing and game changing tattoos (which we are seeing more and more in the media and online,) are born when an artist sheds the categories, specialize in tattooing their own art.

The brief manifesto that came about was that:

1)That I should specialize in a style.
2) That style should be my own.
3) That this style should come from a place of passion and heart, rather than the pre-prescribed categories that most tattoos fit into.

This has led me to change my approach to provide a new line of service: True Fine Art For Bodies

In keeping with my old and ongoing values, and standing commitment to provide consistent service to clients, I will of  still offering what will hence forward be known as the Custom design approach. Hugely excited for the projects that this will bring about.”

CREATIVE PROCESS

As always,

EACH TATTOO begins with a new client consultation where we will meet, and begin to CREATE.
First we will discuss your ideas and review your references, during which we can refer to my fairly exhaustive design library, discuss my current influences, or those most pertinent to your piece, visual cues, inspirations, established art styles (this step usually involves a little bit of client education, so do not be intimidated if your exposure is as yet limited! Tattooing is truly a transformative experience.)
From there, we will decide on which method to pursue, and proceed appropriately.

THE CUSTOM DESIGN APPROACH

What established Fine Art For Bodies, was very custom-design oriented method, where the client is able to provide their own reference pictures, research, sketches, notes, etc, and sit together with the artist to collaboratively design their piece.

While this can be cumbersome for some, it does provide the unique opportunity for continuous, unlimited feedback on the part of the client.
This approach is ideal for the client who:

  • Wants to be in the drivers seat
  • Has a specific vision, and wants to see it skillfully executed with limited variation.

While any tattoo client still needs to understand that a tattoo may vary from the original design or concept, this is for when, similar to graphic design, you have a creative idea, or a specific idea or project in mind, and you just need a skilled technician to execute it.  It is like you are using my hands.

The steps:
Consultation When we meet initially,  I will request that you bring 1-3 printed references for each visual element that you would like to incorporate into your tattoo. During your consultation, we will get right to work designing.

I will usually begin by sketching directly on your body to create a pattern, and then start to do overlays to narrow down the details. You may use this time to a discuss, review, and ask as many questions but please remember that it is billed hourly- the most cost effective way is to answer emails via email prior to starting.

Your deposit will begin to apply towards this time spent developing, and depending on how we use the time and if we use it all,  all or part or none of it will apply towards your tattoo or further design work. If all of your design is completed during the intial consultation, we can go right into scheduling your first session.

Design sessions If there is more than the initial hours worth of design to do, we will schedule an interim design session, where we will meet again to develop your design further.  This is your second chance to offer as much or as little input as you desire. Because this is a dedicated, focused in-studio development session, this service is billed at an hourly rate.
At the conclusion of your design session, we may have finished completed linework, or a decent rendering.
here may be further design to finalize, we will determine whether we need an additional design session, or if we will be able to finalize the
Not often fully rendered complete artwork, you can request the additional work be done to render fully, but as this is additional artwork not necessary for your tattoo, this will also be at an hourly rate. <this hsould be in the TERMS>

Very rarely does a tattoo take more than 1-2 design sessions to develop.

First Session: We will either get right to it, or complete the final steps in completing and preparing your design and/or linework, and begin to tattoo.

THE FINE ART APPROACH

For those who desire to have their body be the canvas for an artist’s ultimate expression, there is the Fine Art Approach. This option, is much closer to a fine art commission-based method, where you tell your artist what you want to see in your painting, what you like in their work and past pieces of theirs that you love, and then they create an expressive, inspired piece of art for you based on your discussion.
This translates to tattooing with you ideally telling me what you want to see IN your tattoo, roughly where you want to put it, and what style you would like to see it in. Consultation
For the Fine Art Approach, we will still meet and discuss your tattoo in depth,
discuss my artist statement, theories, visual cues, inspirations, etc.
The steps:

Client may select from a pre-existing completed or in-progress tattoo designs that I have in the studio or in various states of completion; Or may  reference previous tattoos that I’ve done, my ample reference library.
Then, based on what we discuss, what we’ve reviewed, your artist will then go forward with the creative freedom you’ve granted to create a truly original, inspired piece of art for you. From there, we will schedule you for a desing review, usuall 1-3 weeks out, to allow me to complete your design. Your deliverable will be…
may be a color study, may be a sketch, may be linework, etc.
Finally, we will schedule your first session.

For those who are willing to allow their body to be the canvas for an artist to express their vision, wear this for life. etc.

Artist will be much more selective
